Educating at Home

Service Description: Occasionally, parents prefer to arrange their child’s education ‘otherwise’ than in a school, usually providing this education at home. Parents who educate their children at home may do so for a number of reasons, possibly based on firm convictions about education. The Local Authority may make enquiries in order to establish that a suitable education is being provided.

Your FAQ

Question: Is it legal to educate my child at home?

Answer: Yes, home education is a legal alternative to school. A child is of compulsory education age from the beginning of the school term after his or her fifth birthday. Young people born after 31 August 1996 need to stay in full time education or some form of work-based learning until they reach the age of seventeen.
