Your FAQ

Question: Do I need to apply for Listed Building Consent for 'minor' changes to listed buildings?

Answer: Even changes that may seem minor are likely to be considered an "alteration" or "extension" in the context of listed buildings. These include:

Alteration or replacement of any door or window, inside or out, and whether an "original", a later or a recent alteration.

Removal of internal walls or partitions of whatever date or construction.

Changes to roofing materials.

Painting, rendering, repointing, cleaning of brickwork or masonry

Changes to external cladding materials such as weather boarding or rendering.

Insertion of skylights of "velux" type roof lights.

Removal of chimneys or fireplaces even if not in use.

Cleaning or stripping of timbers.

Any extensions or additions including conservatories.

The installation of alarm boxes, meter boxes, butt bins, extract vents etc may also require Listed Building Consent.

If you propose to carry out minor works to a listed building you are advised to submit written information regarding your proposals to the Conservation and Design team together with any supporting information (you must include at least one photograph or sketch of the proposed works) to enable the team to ascertain whether or not Listed Building Consent would be required. The Conservation & Design team will endeavour to respond to all enquiries within 7 days.
