Abandoned Vehicles


Service Description: Each year in the United Kingdom, approximately 2 million vehicles reach the end of their life, either through age or becoming unusable after involvement in an accident, however, around 3 million vehicles are abandoned in England each year. Abandoned vehicles are expensive to remove, have a negative impact on the environment, look unsightly and can lower the quality of life in neighbourhoods.

Question: What is procedure used for the disposal of abandoned vehicles?

Answer: Local authorities have the power to dispose of abandoned vehicles that they have removed and are in their custody in “such a manner as they think fit” (this may include sale of a vehicle at auction) In the case of a vehicle that in the opinion of the authorised officer is in such a condition that it ought to be destroyed, at any time after its removal.

In satisfying the local authority of ownership, the owner of a vehicle can remove the vehicle from custody after paying sums relating to removal and storage owed to the authority.
