Pollution Control - Contaminated Land

Service Description: The local authority is compiling a list of land that may be contaminated. It inspects planning applications to see if any proposed developments may be on potentially contaminated land and requests conditions to be placed on those that are to ensure that any clean up necessary is carried out. It has agreed a strategy for inspecting and determining whether land may be contaminated and is currently prioritising these. They can also take the necessary action to clean up the pollution.

Your FAQ

Question: How can I find out if the house I am about to buy is built over contaminated land?

Answer: Send a cheque payable to Isle of Wight Council for £47.00 alongside detailed questions as to what it is that you want us to look for. Be as specific as you can, as we will only look for what you ask for. It is very important that you give us as exact an address as you can, preferably a postcode and house number or name. We will then search our databases for evidence of past uses to which the land may have been put. We will produce a map of the property and a report summarising what we have found. In most cases we can't confirm that land is contaminated but we can give strong indications as to further investigation that may need to be carried out. Where we have no information we will say so.
