Waste Strategy and Contract Procurement

Service Description: The current household waste contract comes to an end in 2015 providing us with an opportunity to explore new ways of managing the Island’s waste. We are in the process of developing a new waste strategy for how our waste should be dealt with in the future that may include utilising new technologies. As well as increasing recycling, we will be looking at ways to treat waste as a resource from which we can generate heat and power for the Island.

Your FAQ

Question: Will the new landfill cause pollution?

Answer: Landfill sites are carefully engineered to ensure that they cause as little disturbance to the environment as possible.

Any habitats, ecology or wildlife that may be impacted are thoroughly surveyed by independent ecologists and new habitats are created before construction begins.

Watercourses such as streams, rivers and aquifers are protected from pollutants by an engineered bottom to the landfill that diverts liquids and rainfall that has soaked through the landfill through system of pipes to a treatment plant. Here it is treated before joining the main sewer system.
