Intruducing our new website

Welcome to the new look iwight.com. Read on to see what we have changed, what we have kept the same or improved. Updating the look and feel of the website is the first step in improving our online services and more changes will be coming through the whole of 2009.

As iwight.com is such as large site we have tried to work on all the pages but there may still be some pages that don’t look right. Therefore on the top right and bottom right of every single page there is a link to ‘Report a Problem’ – if you find anything that you think does not look right please use the link and let us know.

The changes were driven by feedback from the visitors to the website and also to allow more services to be available online for residents, businesses and visitors.
The main feedback we received was that although the site was good sometimes information was quite hard to find – and also the look and feel of the site was starting to get a bit dated. Did you know the old look and feel to the website was actually 5 years old!

To that end we have made changes to the design of the website so that is more up to date, makes use of some of the latest features in website design and also increases the ability  to link quickly to important content across the website.

The main areas of the website remain the same with information broken down into the areas below. Much of the information is shared across areas but we have tried to make it as easy to find as possible depending on what type of visitor you are with much better links to relevant content.

Living.  This area is for residents of the Island with easy links to information such as Refuse and Recycling, Community & Local Events, Who is my Local Councillor, Local Weather and online services for residents.

Visiting. If you are coming to the Island for a  visit either for pleasure or business the visiting area of the website has information on how to get to and around the Island, Major Events, Places to Go a Guide to the Island Towns if you were trying to decide if you want to come to the Island there is a review of the last 12 months events.

Online Services. There are over 800 services available online on iwight.com covering a wide range of areas from Paying your Council tax to applying for a Zoo License. The online services area gives easy access to these services in categories such as Apply Online, Pay Online, Report online amongst others.

Learning. The area of the website for people wanting to learn, whether that be people of a school age where we have lots of links to the education website Eduwight and also information for people wanting to carry on learning after school with Lifelong learning information.

Working. The working section is aimed at both businesses and investors to the Island and those who would be looking for Job Vacancies at the Isle of Wight Council. An area that will be expanded, the Working section contains already commuting information, jobs vacancies ad the Council and profiles of a range of Island Businesses.

Council. Everything you would want to know about the Isle of Wight Council including How the Council Works, information on all the local councillors, links to the Town and Parish Council plus details of all the Council’s public meetings and related minutes, agendas and documents.

New features

Some of the key new features are shown below you’ll notice is the ‘Quick Links’ on each of the main pages and other pages where suitable and these provide quick access to specific content across the website.

The A-Z of services menu is now available on all pages of iwight.com. This gives easy access to information on all of the 800+ council services.
More dynamic content. You will notice that there is much more graphical and dynamic content on the website. For example on the home page there are 4 main stories and ‘tabs’ to 5 areas of the website including latest consultations, press releases, Eco Island and the online planning service.

Colour coding across the main areas. There is much stronger colour coding across the main areas of the website so it’s easy to tell what area of the site content relates to and to help visitors know where they are within iwight.com as it is a big website.
