Notice of Community Governance Review

The Isle Of Wight Council has commenced a Community Governance Review of the Isle Of Wight Council Local Authority Area.

The Community Governance Review will cover all aspects relating to boundaries and electoral arrangements of Parish and Town Councils on the Isle of Wight, and a copy of the Notice, which includes the Terms of Reference for the review, can be viewed by clicking here. The ultimate aim of such a review is to secure effective and convenient local government, which represents the identities and interests of local communities.

To allow plenty of time for interested parties to consider a submission over the summer period, a date of 1st October 2010 has been set for initial submissions to be made, and there will be a further period for comments to be made on the Draft Recommendations when they are published on 30th November 2010.

Any alterations to any aspect of boundaries or electoral arrangements will take effect from the 2013 local elections, with the exception of simple changes of name to Civil Parishes and associated Parish Councils, which will take effect as soon as the Order is made, hopefully in spring 2011.

Where any changes have been made to electoral arrangements within the last five years, the Isle of Wight Council will need to seek the agreement of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England before implementing those changes, but this process will not prevent anyone from putting forward suggestions for alterations. A list of Parish and Town Councils whose electoral arrangements are affected is shown below.

The following Parish areas are deemed to have “protected” electoral arrangements, as their existing electoral arrangements have been amended by an Order made by The Electoral Commission, The Local Government Boundary Commission for England or the Secretary of State within the previous five years:

The Local Government Boundary Commission for England must give its consent before the electoral arrangements of any protected parish area are amended.


Publication of Community Governance and Polling Districts & Places Review Summary of Responses and Recommendations

The Summary of Responses and Recommendations has now been published, and may be accessed by clicking here.

A copy of the Responses and Recommendations has been sent to all Parish & Town Councils, and all other parties who responded to the initial consultation.

The Final Report and Recommendations will be discussed at Full Council in June 2011, and the report can be viewed by clicking here.
