Newport Roman Villa

Welcome to Newport Roman Villa a 1,700 year old country pile! Discovered in 1926 when the
owner of a nearby house sank foundations for a garage, subsequent excavations revealed
extensive remains of a late Romano-British farmhouse built around 280 AD.

Newport Roman Villa is a Scheduled Ancient Monument in the care of the Isle of Wight Council
Museums Service.

The Villa is now closed and will re-open from 28th March – 2nd November 2013.

The Villa is open by prior arrangement to groups and school parties in the winter period.

February Half-Term Activity Days at Newport Roman Villa
Wednesday 20 February and Friday 22 February 2013
Newport Roman Villa is opening for two family activity days during the school half-term holiday.
On Wednesday 20 February visitors can try their hand at moulding Roman-themed objects
from clay, while on Friday 22 February there’s a chance to make a colourful mask from craft
materials to take home.

Both events will take place in the indoor activity room between 10.30am and 3.00pm.
The admission fee for these special days will be £1 for all (adults and children). This reduced
admission fee will include all activities and entry to the site.

The villa will open to visitors for these two days during the February half-term;
it will reopen for Easter from 28 March until 2 November 2013.

The well-preserved remains at Newport Roman Villa provide a fascinating insight into country life in third century Britain. The Villa has a superb bath suite with, under floor heating and remnants of mosaic floors.

Sections of the Villa have been reconstructed to illustrate the building materials used; you can peep into a Roman kitchen and see a slave preparing a Roman feast.
