A chapel has existed within the grounds of Carisbrooke Castle since the 11th Century and in 1904 it was restored following the design of the architect Percy Stone. It is now a memorial chapel for Island men who died in service during the First and Second World Wars, and is under the supervision of the St Mary’s Church, Carisbrooke.

St Nicholas was once a parish itself consisting of several detached parts, including Castlehold, Cosham, part of Shide Down and parts of Rowborough and Dodnor. In 1894 it was divided for Civil purposes between the parishes of Newport, Northwood and Carisbrooke.
