Minor changes to taxi fares agreed

Members of the Isle of Wight Council's Regulatory Committee have voted to accept a small number of changes to taxi fares, with one slight increase and two reductions.

Only three changes to the existing table of fares will be coming in. These are:

- Tariff 1 cost per quarter mile has been increased from 40p to 45p.
- The waiting amount permitted for Tariff 2 reduced from 60p to 40p per minute.
- The waiting amount permitted for Tariff 4 reduced from £1 to 80p per minute.

There is now an opportunity for anyone to comment on the changes between 14 December and 14 January.

They can do this by writing to the Licensing Section, Jubilee Stores, The Quay, Newport, Isle of Wight PO30 2EH or by emailing [email protected] by 4pm on 14 January.

Only comments relating to the changes will be considered. If there are no comments, the variation will come into effect on 28 February 2013.

If the proposed changes come in from February, according to latest statistics the cost of a two mile taxi journey under Tariff 1 on the Isle of Wight is £5.70, compared to an average in the south of £5.98. A five mile journey on the Isle of Wight would cost £11.10, with the average in the south being £11.80.

Table of fares

Under the proposals, the table of fares will be as follows:

TARIFF 1 (8am to 10pm)

£3 (£3 current fare) for the first half a mile then 45p every subsequent quarter of a mile. Waiting time every minute will be 40p and taxis should use Tariff 2 when carrying more than four passengers.

TARIFF 2 (6am to 8am and 10pm to midnight)

£4.50 for the first half a mile then 60p every subsequent quarter of a mile. Waiting time every minute will be 40p and taxis should use Tariff 3 when carrying more than four passengers.

TARIFF 3 (Midnight to 6am and used on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Easter Sunday)

£6 for the first half a mile or part of a mile then 80p every subsequent quarter of a mile. Waiting time every minute will be 80p and taxis should use Tariff 4 when carrying more than four passengers.

TARIFF 4 (Midnight to 6am and used on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Easter Sunday with vehicles carrying four or more passengers only)

£7.50 for the first half a mile or part of a mile then £1 every subsequent quarter of a mile. Waiting time every minute will be 80p.

Other so-called 'extra charges' are proposed to be unchanged. These include fouling a vehicle, which is currently £70, a 50p fee for each animal carried (except assistance animals) and 10p per bag of luggage carried.
