Homeless shelter to open during cold snap

The overnight shelter in Newport for those unfortunate enough to be homeless and living on the streets is to open this evening (6 February) up to and including Sunday 10 February due to a period of cold weather forecast for the coming days.

The shelter at Downside Community Learning Centre, Furlongs is run by volunteers from the Church of Victorious Life with support from the Isle of Wight Council. As well as providing a bed for the night, volunteers from the church will supply free hot food and drinks along with bathing and laundry facilities.

The shelter is open overnight from 7.30pm to 8.30am each day until the morning of Monday 11 February, when volunteers will review the weather conditions and decide whether to continue providing overnight shelter.

Housing officers from the council will be supporting volunteers and available to offer advice on request.

If anyone has any concerns about a person who appears to be homeless, or needs information about housing support, please contact the housing team based at County Hall or in an emergency out of hours, call Wightcare on (01983) 821105.
