EDUCATION ADMISSION APPEALS

2013/14 ACADEMIC YEAR

Under the School Admission Appeals Code, which came into force on 1 February 2012, Admission Authorities must publish an appeals timetable no later than 28 February each year. Below is a guide to the dates and deadlines admission appeals for the 2013/14 academic year are scheduled (however it is emphasised that the dates are indicative and may be subject to minor amendment).

Secondary Schools

Letters will be dispatched to parents including their “offer” for which school their children will attend on 1 March 2013.

  • The deadline for parents to lodge an appeal against refusal of admission to a school will be 20 school days after the issue of the “offer” letters. This being 28 March 2013.

  • Any appeals lodged within this deadline, must be heard 40 school days from 28 March 2012, although the appeals code states that parents must also be given a minimum of 10 school days notice of their appeal hearing date. On this basis, it is planned for appeal hearings to start the week commencing 13 May 2013 with on time appeal applications being concluded by 17 June 2013.

Primary Schools

  • The deadline for parents to lodge an appeal against the refusal of admission to a school will be 20 school days after the issue of the “offer” letters. This being 14 May 2013.

  • Any appeals lodged within this deadline, must be heard 40 school days from 14 May 2013, although the appeals code states that parents must also be given a minimum of 10 school days’ notice of their appeal hearing date. • In regard to appeal requests that have not been submitted by the deadline, every effort will be made to incorporate them amongst the other appeals for that school and they should be heard within 40 school days of the deadline for lodging appeals where this is possible, or within 30 school days of the appeal being lodged (whichever is the later).

  • Applications for an appeal “in year” will be arranged within 30 school days.
