Residential Care

Care Overview

Residential and nursing home care provides 24 hour care for people who can’t manage living in their own home, even with support from home care services.

Residential care home staff help with personal care, such as getting up, washing, dressing and going to the toilet.  Each residential home generally offers care to people with a similar condition or problems such as those with physical disabilities, a learning disability, mental health problems, or to older people with physical disabilities or dementia.  Meals are provided and there are often outings and other activities.

Nursing homes also offer care to people with a similar condition or problem but specialise in providing nursing care for persons suffering from sickness, injury or infirmity - the kind of care that requires the skills of a qualified nurse.  Nursing homes are required by law to have a qualified nurse on duty 24 hours a day.

How to apply or access this service:

We have to target our services towards the people who need them most and to ensure this is done fairly we have an assessment process which highlights the most urgent needs.

Advice will be given about whether or not someone is likely to be able to get help arranged by the Community Wellbeing and Social Care Directorate.  The first stage of the process is called an assessment.

To request an assessment you need to contact the First Response Duty Team on 01983 814980
