COMMISSION FOR SAFER COMMUNITIES – 6 OCTOBER 2005

AGENDA ITEM : CRIMESTOPPERS INITIATIVE

Introductory Notes by MR SIMON THEOBALDS OF CRIMESTOPPERS

Crimestoppers is an independent charity established to bring the guilty to justice by taking information anonymously from the public and passing it to the police.  It has been available to the Isle of Wight since 1994.  Last year 100 good calls were made from the Island which resulted in ten arrests, as well as contributing to existing intelligence, disrupting crime and starting new enquiries.

Crimestoppers is a valuable tool for making communities safer.  It is considerably under used. A project worker - Simon Theobalds - is now funded to work specifically in Hampshire & IOW.  A board has now been established on the Island to generate campaigns that will make the phone ring.

Mr Theobalds will also talk about Crimestoppers in more general terms - particularly about their Pan initiative, SNAP, and the two new projects from Crimestoppers week which relate to a knives campaign and a citizenship resource for schools.
