Committee:     SOCIAL SERVICES, HOUSING AND BENEFITS SELECT COMMITTEE

Date:               2 OCTOBER 2002

Title:                HOMELESS MONOTORING STATISTICS

REPORT OF THE STRATEGIC DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL SERVICES AND HOUSING

1.         SUMMARY

This report gives members the opportunity to receive homeless monitoring statistics for scrutiny purposes.

2.         BACKGROUND

The Housing Services section of the Directorate keep a range of housing and homeless statistics, some of which are reported in the Housing Annual Report, and some of which have to be collected for Government quarterly returns in June, September, December and March each year.  Some are also sent to the Government’s B&B Unit on a monthly basis.

The proposal is to supply Members with the attached homeless statistics to enable appropriate monitoring and scrutiny.  Members’ views are sought on the content of the statistics, and the frequency of reporting.

Attached, as Appendix 1, are figures for the end of month 5 (August), with full year, or end of year figures for 2001/02 for comparison.

3.         FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

There are no immediate financial implications arising from these reports, but the cost of providing B&B accommodation for homeless households amounts to over £800,000 (gross) p.a.
