SUMMARY/PURPOSE
This inspection of Social Care Services for Older People took place on
the Isle of Wight between 18th and 28th June 2002. The objectives of this assessment was to
evaluate:
·
The Isle of Wight Social Services implementation of national and local
objectives relating to the social care needs of older people; and
·
The quality of outcomes for service users and carers.
The Social Services Inspectorate
were interested in seeing how well the Isle of Wight had responded to the National
Policy Agenda for Older People set out in the white paper Modernising Social
Services. They looked at how we
promote independence, fairness and consistency. They also looked at how we were addressing the requirements of
the National Services Framework for Older People.
2.
BACKGROUND
The Social Services Inspectorate is a professional division within the
Department of Health set up to carry out a number of tasks, including
inspecting the quality of Social Services.
As such they inspect all services provided by Social Services. Forming a view of the service they evaluate
the service against standards based on regions and guidance, speak to service
users, their carers and employees .
They collect and analyse information from a number of services. The judgments they form are fed back to
Government Ministers, and, after presentation to committee, are made accessible
to the public.
3.
OUTCOME OF CONSULTATIONS
The Social Services Inspectorate has concluded that the service was
serving most people well and prospects for the future of Older People Services
for the future are excellent. They also
identified three good practice areas, these were the service provided by Sound
Advice, the centralized Duty Team for Older People which was a result of a
recent reorganization for Adult Services and the Welfare Rights Service which
is provided centrally for the whole Island.
The report details a number of areas for improvement which will be taken
