PAPER B
SOCIAL SERVICES, HOUSING AND BENEFITS SELECT COMMITTEE –
12 JUNE 2003
WOMEN’S
REFUGE
REPORT OF THE HEAD OF HOUSING SERVICES
REASON FOR SELECT COMMITTEE CONSIDERATION
Following the regular submission of monitoring data relating to the Women’s Refuge, members have requested a more detailed presentation on the issues relating to domestic violence. The indication from the performance indicators is that the services provided by the refuge are consistently over subscribed and that as a result women in need may be unable to access appropriate services.
Members will be aware that the Council has fully supported the work of the Refuge in the past and will continue to do so within the new Homelessness Strategy, which will be presented to members in July. In the meantime the Coordinator of the Island Women’s Refuge, will present to members more detail on the needs of the victims of domestic violence and outline the potential response which might be considered in response to these needs.
Appendix 1 details the nature and extent of the activities of the Women’s Refuge.
