This
report has been provided to the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service based on
the data provided to the Isle of Wight Council.
For each
question, the graph details the total percentages provided in response to the questions
and the data is then analysed in terms of age, gender, employment status and
house tenure.
Question 7 – The Fire and Rescue
Service aims to commit more resources to prevent fires and other accidents
occurring by re-deploying some personnel from operational duties to a community
safety role. To what extent do you agree with this policy?

- 53% ‘agreed’ with the policy
of re-deploying some personnel from operational duties to a community
safety role, while 18% ‘strongly agreed’
- 12% ‘disagreed’ and 4%
‘strongly disagreed’ with the policy
- 12% stated that they had no
opinion and 0.3% did not give an answer
- The policy found greatest
favour amongst the 18-24 age group, with over 92% either agreeing or
strongly agreeing with the policy
- The greatest disagreement was
found in the 25-44 age group as 19% were found to ‘disagree’ or ‘strongly
disagree’ with the policy
- In terms of gender, females
(73% ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’) were slightly more supportive of the
policy than males (69% who ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’)
- With regards to employment
status, 100% of those in full time education agreed with the policy
- 50% of those in full-time
employment agreed with the policy, while 17% strongly agreed
- 67% of those unemployed and
available for work agreed with the policy, while 74% of those wholly
retired from work agreed or strongly agreed
- 67% of those who classed
themselves as ‘doing something else’ disagreed
- In terms of housing tenure,
the policy has the greatest support amongst those who rent their house
from the Isle of Wight council (75%) and those who have housing provided
by their employer (75%)
- The least support was found
amongst those who classed their housing tenure as ‘other’ with 33%
disagreeing or strongly disagreeing with the policy
Question 8 – To what extent do you
agree that in future the Fire and Rescue Service should work in partnership
with a wider range of organisations to achieve its aims of improving safety and
reducing risks on the Island?

- The highest approval was found
in the 18-24 age group, with 100% supporting the policy
- In all of the other age
groups(25-44, 45-59, 60-64 and 65+), over 80% ‘agreed’ or ‘strongly
agreed’ with the policy
- The greatest disagreement with
working in partnership was found amongst the 60-64 age group with 9%
disagreeing or strongly disagreeing
- A slightly higher percentage
of females (88%) support the policy compared to males (85%)
- 88% of employees in full-time
jobs support the Service in working in partnership with a wider range of
organisations, with only 4.2% disagreeing or strongly disagreeing
- 100% of those in full-time
education and of those who stated that they were ‘doing something else’
- The highest levels of
disagreement came from those who are ‘permanently sick/disabled’ (with 15%
disagreeing) and those who are unemployed and available for work (11%
‘disagree’)
- 87% of those who have bought
their home outright or is being bought support the policy, while 88% of
those who rent from housing association also ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’
with the policy
- 100% of those who rent their
housing from the Isle of Wight Council and those whose housing is provided
by their employer support a partnership approach
- The greatest disagreement with
the policy was found amongst those who classed their housing tenure as
‘other’ (17% disagreed)
Question 9 – The Fire and Rescue
Service currently carries out some educational work in schools. It is our aim
to expand and develop this initiative. To what extent do you agree that this is
an effective use of resources?

- 55% of respondents ‘agree’
that carrying out educational work in schools is an effective use of
resources, while 32% ‘strongly agree’
- 6% ‘disagree’ and 0.3%
‘strongly disagree’
- 6% stated that they did not
have an opinion on this matter and 0.3% did not give an answer
- 100% of respondents aged 18-24
supported the educational work in schools policy
- In all of the other age groups
(25-44, 45-59, 60-64 and 65+) over 85% ‘agreed’ or ‘strongly agreed’
- Only 7% of those in the 25-44,
45-59 and 65+ age groups, and 5% in 60-64 group either ‘disagreed’ or
‘strongly disagreed’
- Again, a slightly higher
proportion of females (89%) supported the policy compared to males (86%)
- 87% of those in full-time
employment agree or strongly agreed with the educational work being
carried out , while 88% of those in part-time employment support it
- 83% of those in full-time
education agreed with the policy
- The largest level of
disagreement was found amongst those who class themselves as ‘doing
something else’, with 33% disagreeing
- In terms of house tenure, 100%
approval for the policy was found in those who rent accommodation from the
Isle of Wight Council and those whose housing is supplied by their
employer
- 87% of those who bought their
house outright or are buying their house with a mortgage supported the
policy
- The highest disapproval was
recording in the respondents who rent from a private landlord, with 12%
disagreeing with the policy
