COMMUNITY RENEWABLE ENERGY STRATEGY TASK GROUP - UPDATE ON PROGRESS

REPORT OF THE HEAD OF PAID SERVICE

PURPOSE

To update Members on the progress made by the Community Renewable Energy Strategy Task Group

BACKGROUND

Members will be aware that the Isle of Wight is a participant in Altener - a European funded project aimed at encouraging private and public investment in the production and use of renewable energy. The Task Group has been established to enable Members to work with officers and the community to develop the Island's Renewable Energy Strategy.

PROGRESS

The Task Group has met on three occasions. Members have been briefed on background to the Altener Project and have received presentations from a number of specialists in renewable energy. At the Task Group's most recent meeting Stephen Ward, the Council's consultant on the ALTENER project, reported on the results of his analysis into the potential for implementing renewable energy projects on the Island by the target date of 2010. The Task Group has agreed that they would like to undertake a fact-finding visit to South Lakeland District Council to view various wind turbine clusters.
