Title : WASTE MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING TASK GROUP – UPDATE ON PROGRESS
REPORT OF THE HEAD OF SELECT COMMITTEE SUPPORT
PURPOSE
Members will recall that the Environment and Transport Select Committee has established several Task Groups with agreed terms of reference to investigate issues that fall within the Select Committee’s remit. This report is directed at providing Members with information about the progress made by the Waste Management and Recycling Task Group.
BACKGROUND
1. the terms of reference for the Task Group are:
• To assess whether recycling and collection targets are being met and whether performance can be improved and if so how
• Getting the recycling message across to the public – to review how it could be explained better
• To review arrangements for issuing of composting bins and black boxes
• To identify and investigate options for recycling more commercial waste
2. The Task Group has met on two occasions. Cllr John Howe was appointed Task Group Chairman. Members have reviewed the Waste Management Contract and have considered the latest regulations on the disposal of waste refrigeration equipment. Future areas of investigation include an assessment of the recycling and collection targets and a review of the recycling message.
3. The Task Group has visited the Lynnbottom landfill site and the Forest Road Waste Derived Fuel Plant. Representatives of Island Waste Services will be invited to contribute to future meetings.
OPTIONS
Members are invited to agree a date by which a substantive report from the Task Group with recommendations about key issues could be expected.
