Title: SPECIFICATION FOR NEW AND REPLACEMENT STREET LIGHTING LANTERNS
REPORT OF THE STRATEGIC DIRECTOR OF CORPORATE AND ENVIRONMENT SERVICES
SUMMARY/PURPOSE
To advise Members of the Council’s specification policy for new and replacement street lighting lanterns.
BACKGROUND
Members will be aware that the decision to convert all the street lighting stock to High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lanterns was approved some years ago. The conversion of some 11,500 street lights to HPS is now complete and all new street lighting and replacement lanterns are provided to HPS specifications. The benefits of HPS include:-
(i) low energy efficient long life lamps,
(ii) good colour rendering,
(iii) suitable for all locations including conservation areas,
(iv) standardisation of stock,
(v) reduced maintenance stock.
In addition to the benefits listed above, the Council requires all new and replacement street lighting schemes to be designed and implemented in accordance with the Institute of Lighting Engineers’ guidelines for the reduction of light pollution.
RECOMMENDATION To note the Council’s use of HPS lanterns and the adherence to the Institute of Lighting Engineers’ design guidelines to minimise light pollution. |
