PAPER E
EDUCATION, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND LIFELONG LEARNING SELECT COMMITTEE - 19 MAY 2003 POST 16 PERFORMANCE 2002 REPORT OF THE STRATEGIC DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT |
BACKGROUND
1. This is a report of the final validated results for the 2002 Post 16 examinations in the Island High schools.
2. The report was held over from the Select Committee meeting of 17 February because at that stage the DfES had not published the final performance tables. This extensive delay was as a result of the national problems in A level awarding in the summer of 2002.
THE PERFORMANCE TABLES
1. The tables on the next page give details of performance for each High school, the national comparators and where appropriate Authority comparators.
2. 2002 represented the first year results of a new Post 16 examination and points scoring system. Overall comparison with previous years is not directly applicable.
3. The relatively small size of the Isle of Wight maintained schools cohort means that this data must be treated with caution. The data shown is for comprehensive schools, with the exception of the England average, which is for all schools.
4. 95% of students gained an A/AVCE pass with a grade A-E, which was 1% above the national rate of 94%. 77% of students gained an A/AVCE pass in three or more subjects.
5. 59% of students gained an A/AVCE pass with the higher grades of A-C.
6. Only 2% of the students entered failed to gain any pass in an A/AVCE subject.
7. In respect of their further and higher education destinations most students were able to gain access to their first choice courses and overall the Island results compare favourably with those of our statistical neighbours.
