REVIEW OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT COUNCIL EVENTS PROGRAMME

REPORT OF THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF WIGHT LEISURE

SUMMARY/PURPOSE

Members are to receive a presentation from Wight Leisure giving an overview of the 2003/04 Annual Events programme delivered.

BACKGROUND

The Isle of Wight Council’s Annual Events programme is managed and delivered by Wight Leisure, the leisure services department.

Members are provided with the overall statistics for information (Appendix 1).

In December 2001 the Council agreed the strategic aims and objectives for the events programme and recognised the contribution the delivery of the programme makes towards the Council’s corporate objectives.  Members agreed to a three year rolling programme for events, to be review annually.

Wight Leisure developed the following aims, also agreed by the Executive, for the overall events programme to achieve:

·         To develop events to encourage participation and pursuit of excellence

·         To support community regeneration and social inclusion

·         To provide cultural and sporting experiences and opportunities for the community and visitors

·         To support events with clear development potential and targets

·         To support tourism strategies and enhance the Island as a tourist destination

·         To support economic regeneration activity

·         To raise the profile of the arts, sport and culture on the Island through a varied and diverse programme

Marketing & Promotion

Wight Leisure continues to work with Isle of Wight Tourism to maximise the promotion of the event programme but more specifically, the five strategic events.  In 2003 the events team also worked with independent PR agents as part of sponsorship packages.

The five strategic events in 2003 were:  the Walking Festival, Isle of Wight Festival, Skandia Cowes Week, Cycling Festival and White Air.  These will remain for 2004 and will be promoted through both Wight Leisure and either Isle of Wight Tourism or the press & PR agency they out-source to.

2004/05 Programme of Events

Members will receive details of the 2004/05 programme following the setting of the 2004/05 budgets.  At this stage for 2004/05 the only committed events are the five strategic events; Walking, Music, Cycling & Extreme Sports Festivals, Cowes Week infrastructure support, plus the Microsoft Challenger Event.

OUTCOME OF CONSULTATIONS

The 2003/04 annual events programme was agreed having consulted with a range of community groups, organisers, agencies and sponsors and the need to deliver the programme within the allocated budgets.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

There are no direct financial implications associated with this report.  However, members may wish to debate the effects of the proposed savings to be identified from the Annual Events Programme budget and forward recommendations for consideration to the Executive when setting the budget.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1.      To receive and note the report

  1. To consider making recommendations to the Executive regarding the 2004/05 programme of events when considering the budget.
