ACTION REQUIRED BY THE SELECT COMMITTEE
Consideration of ongoing partnership between
Island 2000 and the Council
BACKGROUND
Island 2000 was created by the Isle of Wight Council in 1997 as the beginnings of a bid to the Millennium Commission. This bid succeeded in funding the Ventnor Botanic Gardens and Dinosaur Isle but left out the landscape, conservation art and education outreach proposed in the same package. This work became the remit of the AONB Project Team until August 1998. The end of funding arrangements for this unit then threatened its ability to continue to develop and extend the Island 2000 vision and so the Island 2000 Trust was created – an independent limited company/charitable non-profit whose task was, and remains, to deliver the best of the Island 2000 vision from 1997 and take it further.
This year is the Trust’s 5th birthday and BOOK 2 celebrates
our work and achievements accordingly.
RELEVANT PLANS,
POLICIES, STRATEGIES AND PERFORMANCE INDICATORS
Island 2000’s work has strong links to the following: Community Strategy, UDP (and incipient Local Development Framework), Biodiversity Action Plan, Cultural Strategy, Area Investment Framework, Rural strategy, Local Transport Plan, AONB Management Plan.
CONSULTATION
PROCESS
Island 2000 continues
to refer back to the original consultative process underpinning the 1997
Millennium bid. The work of the Trust is by its very nature consultative and
engages the community in discussion, debate and collaboration.
FINANCIAL, LEGAL,
CRIME AND DISORDER IMPLICATIONS
None, although the Trust remains precariously placed for core funding
and so is always happy to discuss financial options with all partners including
the Council. Island 2000’s current reserves only last until March 2004.
