12. THE ISSUE AND RE-ISSUE OF ‘D’ PLATES ON HACKNEY CARRIAGE VEHICLES
The Senior Licensing Officer presented his report of the issue and re-issue of ‘D’ plates on Hackney Carriage Vehicles where a licence had been granted for a vehicle which had a swivel seat fitted as part of the Council’s licence conditions.
The Working Party were advised that no further licences had been issued to vehicles where the only adaption was a front passenger swivel seat. Members were reminded of the definition of Suitably Adapted Vehicles for Disabled Use that had been agreed at the last meeting of the Working Party.
The Isle of Wight Taxi Proprietors Association wanted it made clear that there would be no more ‘D’ Plates issued. The Senior Licensing Officer advised the members that if ‘D’ Plates had already been issued then those licences only would be renewed.
The Portfolio Holder believed it should be made clear that for future designation, vehicles for disabled use would have a ‘W’ Plate. To differentiate between vehicles a ‘D’ Plate would be used for vehicles with a swivel seat and a ‘W’ Plate for vehicles for wheelchair use.
RESOLVED :
THAT the report be noted.
